Injectable muscle relaxants are used here at our Newcastle clinic for wrinkle treatment to reduce dynamic lines (lines caused by repetitive facial movement) and wrinkles that form in the upper face.
Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to help restore loss of volume in cheeks, enhance and define the lips, fill in facial wrinkles around the mouth and generally restore a smoother more youthful appearance. A receding chin and nose with a slight downward turn can also be artistically corrected with fillers.
Injectable muscle relaxants and dermal fillers have given Dr Nici the tools needed to remove the need for the scalpel in the maintenance of a youthful appearance. This wrinkle treatment allows her to match the natural consistency of different facial tissues so that we have added ability to support, lift and sculpt the face against gravity and subtly and naturally enhance youthful, attractive features.
From the age of 35 onwards, a noticeable decrease in volume occurs in the upper part of the face due to the combined effects of fat loss, bone reabsorbtion and gravitational pull. The results are flattened cheeks, jowling (sagging of the jaw line) and looser skin, which wrinkles more easily.
Dermal fillers and anti wrinkle injections are designed to be injected deep beneath the tissue, says Dr Nici. It has the ability to create significant bulk, is long lasting (1-2 years) and allows me to sculpt the face very precisely. The product creates a similar effect to cheek and chin implants but without the surgery and takes roughly 30 minutes in the chair. It has given me a much greater ability to rejuvenate the upper face but the added fill also takes up the loose skin and so tightens all the way to the jaw line to improve jowling.
Anti wrinkle injections can also help treat dark circles under the eyes. These are another feature that creates an aged, unhealthy and unattractive appearance to the face, often caused solely or in part by deep tear troughs. This is a groove in the bone just below the eye socket, causing a shadow. Dark veins running near it also add to the colour.
A soft but long-lasting hyaluronic acid filler which matches the consistency of the tissue around the eye is used to fill the tear trough and lift the overlaying tissues away from the dark veins.
Even a subtle decrease in brow height adds to an aged appearance. It makes the face look more tired, makes the eyes appear less bright and wide open and causes an excess of skin on the upper eyelid. Injectable muscle relaxants can create a very good improvement here by rebalancing the muscles and lifting the brow. However, the results can be further enhanced by injecting a filler such as Juvéderm Ultra or Ultra Plus, which have a very soft and fleshy feel, and matches the natural tissue found in the brow area perfectly.
With this more advanced wrinkle treatment technique the brow can be further lifted and supported with the fillers and can also pad out the area below the brow plumping up the tissues to restore the youthful appearance here and in doing so further taking up the loose upper eye lid skin. The technique is invaluable for patients who do not have enough active muscle above the outer brow to achieve an adequate lift with the use of injectable muscle relaxants alone.
Filling out the nasolabial folds and marionette lines which are the results of gravitational cheek sag around the sides of the nose and corners of the mouth are also essential in preventing the early signs of age as are filling out fine lines and wrinkles around the cheeks and mouth. The right filler to use here is whichever has the right lifting ability and textural consistency to match the surrounding tissue. And, of course never under estimate a subtle enhancement of the lip border and lip volume.
When a Facelift is required to lift and tighten the face then nothing else will create the same improvement. However, the gap between non-surgical rejuvenation and the scalpel is even greater with better products and better techniques. And with a skilled and artful hand to create subtle and natural results the new products available certainly spread that gap by several years.
